Why are people so turned off by politics?
Why are people so turned off by politics? This discussion mostly involves expletives that need to be deleted in polite company.
The explanation usually boils down to the perception that politicians are the major reason for dysfunction and if we could somehow replace all of them with folks who would do what’s best for the country, not the parties and special interests, all would be well. For a popular version of that explanation see Charlie Reese’s rendition after a lifetime of covering politics. This was originally published in the Orlando Sentinel.
While it is tempting to embrace such comforting notions, it really misses the major point. The politicians are in office only because “We the People” put them there. We keep electing candidates who promise to deliver all sorts of benefits and lower our taxes simultaneously. In the immortal words of Walt Kelly’s Pogo, “We have met the enemy and he is us.”
